Retro-dates
The story thus far as told through the medium of WhatsApp messages:
[23/03 17:50] Janet: Basics: Nick was airlifted to Royal London hospital yesterday after being run over yesterday morning. He has three fractures to his pelvis, and a few in his wrist, a hell of a lot of bruising, but nothing life threatening or limb threatening.
[23/03 17:55] Janet: He is awaiting surgery on his wrist which will be as soon as they're able to find a surgery slot but amazingly, despite his pelvis being driven over by both front and rear wheels of the car, he doesn't need surgery and the fractures will heal on their own, which is fantastic. Not sure how long he'll be in the hospital but at least long enough to have the operation plots a few days post op. Still in a lot of pain but he's doing worlds better than yesterday and is currently tucking in to some ice cream :)
[23/03 18:04] Janet:
The police know who the driver is, not sure what's happening with legal proceedings yet but we will be contacting the police so Nick can update his statement. We've seen a dash cam video of Nick being hit and it looks very obvious that she could have avoided running him over but that isn't something we're dealing with in the immediate short term.
[23/03 18:05] Janet: I'm fine, I'm staying at the hospital in the relatives' rooms for the time being.
Visitors may be appreciated at some point but probably not just yet as pain management is variable
[23/03 18:20] Janet: If you'd like to send him a card, I assume they should get to him if you send them to:
Nick Rhodes (aka X-ray BJP)
Ward 12D
Whitechapel Rd,
Whitechapel,
London
E1 1BB
[23/03 18:21] Janet: The X-ray BJP is his"trauma name", i.e. When they don't know a patient's name so they don't end up with a lot of "John Doe"s
[24/03 09:05] Janet: So, Nick appears to be one of the most resilient people I've ever encountered. Less than 48 hours after a car ran over his pelvis twice causing three fractures, he sent me a picture of him standing up.
Still awaiting wrist surgery which definitely won't be today but will be as soon as they can.
[24/03 22:22] Janet: Today's update. Still no wrist surgery, could be tomorrow, could be waiting another day or two. Nick managed to stand up again this evening and is very keen for physio to start so he can begin to use his walking frame. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Nick is the most resilient person I have ever met!
(Side note: The Harrow Times want to do a piece on Nick and his accident and have asked me to send a picture "expressing his personality". I'm very tempted to send a picture of Nick with a platter of profiteroles.)
[25/03 19:11] Janet: Today's update: Nick managed to get all the way to and from the bathroom (a good 20m round trip) only using a fancy stable stick, and managed a shower and a change of clothes which was amazing. He's still in a lot of pain on movement obviously though.
Operation for the wrist finally scheduled for tomorrow but we shall see if that actually happens!
[25/03 19:35] Janet: Nick is not up to visitors yet and definitely won't be until at least after the operation, and probably a few days after that. He's exhausted, he's ok, but just psychologically and physically empty.
New updates will now be in blog format.

In defence of the title, I was far warmer after using the car as a blanket so it's a success in that regard...
ReplyDeleteIs that maybe because they then gave you real blankets?
